Atul Patel is currently Chief Consultant and Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Vedanta Institute of Medical Sciences and at the Department of Infectious Diseases of Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad. He is also a Visiting Associate Professor at the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of South Florida. He has been conferred a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA) since 2014.
Dr Patel’s major interest and expertise is in the management of HIV-positive patients, particularly the use of antiretroviral therapy and treatment of opportunistic infections apart from invasive fungal infections. He has been presenting his work at Indian and international meetings since 1996, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Clinical Microbiology and Infection, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, among others.
Additionally, Dr Patel served as a temporary adviser to WHO Headquarter Geneva on fixed-dose drug combinations in the treatment of HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria in 2003. He is a member of various international societies, such as the International AIDS Society, the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He is also the current Co-chair of the Asian Fungal Working Group (AFWG), a working group under the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM).
